CARNIVALS

FORTUNAE FILMS

The Manchester 2024 Carnival promises to be a vibrant celebration of culture, music, and community spirit. Known for its colourful parades, infectious rhythms, and rich cultural displays, the event draws people from all walks of life to revel in the heart of the city. As I dive into this year's festivities, I'm eager to capture the moments that define the carnival's essence—the laughter, the dance, and the stories woven into every beat.

My first encounter with a carnival was at The Notting Hill Carnival, and it was both overwhelming and fascinating. The unfamiliar environment sparked my curiosity, but what truly captivated me was the sight of bold, beautiful people unapologetically expressing themselves. Their unique energy, style, and confidence were unlike anything I encounter in daily life, and I couldn’t help but be drawn in by their vibrant presence.

Since that first carnival experience, attending these vibrant events has become a cherished part of my celebrative values, and I now plan to attend as many as I can. Despite the excitement, I never felt compelled to bring my camera along—it was simply too overwhelming. There was too much to take in, and I struggled to find a clear focus for something that stirred such deep emotions. The sheer flood of impressions made it challenging to decide what was worth capturing.

CARNIVALS

Carnivals hold a certain lushness that has always sparked my creative curiosity, though I could never quite define why—until recently. A phrase that’s been resonating with me is, "Life is a constant phase of evolution." As our perceptions are shaped by the past and our future moulded by experiences, I've come to realize how my focus has shifted over time. What began as an overwhelming first encounter has transformed into a deep appreciation for those who unapologetically express themselves. This realization marked a turning point—I finally understood what I wanted to capture at these vibrant events. My first attempt at this renewed focus was Manchester Carnival 2024, and I hope my images truly align with the story I'm telling.

At first, I was hesitant to approach people and ask to take their photos, especially when I was feeling self-conscious about my presence. But the energy around me was contagious—everyone looked so confident, so cool. My curiosity and fascination with their stories and expressions always outweighed any nervousness or intimidation I felt.

Diving into the Carnival

At first, I was hesitant to approach people and ask to take their photos, especially when I was feeling self-conscious about my presence. But the energy around me was contagious—everyone looked so confident, so cool. My curiosity and fascination with their stories and expressions always outweighed any nervousness or intimidation I felt.

What I aimed to capture was the essence of self-expression. Recently, I’ve embraced expressing myself more authentically—through my hair, my clothes, and the various moods that reflect different sides of me. Sharing these aspects with close friends or on social media has sometimes led to concerns or even unfollows, but I've made peace with it. I realize that people often react based on their perceptions, rather than taking the time to understand or appreciate someone else’s expression. Perhaps I’m overlooking their feelings and beliefs in return, but that’s a conversation for another day when the pieces of this puzzle fit together.

I’m not sure how to describe the next 5-6 hours I spent at the carnival. It felt like I was in my world, oblivious to the present dangers. But within that world, there was admiration, surprise, lust, and even fear. I saw some of the most beautiful women and the most handsome men, individuals for whom fitness was a lifestyle. I witnessed so much, and captured so many—and in the end, I felt a deep sense of contentment.

Alright, I’m going to stop here because I feel the stimulation building up, and I’m going to let my images speak for themselves. If you were there, you know exactly what I’m talking about. If you weren’t, trust me—find a carnival and add it to your bucket list.

That said, I have to admit that this year’s carnival didn’t offer as much in terms of the expressiveness I had hoped for creatively. Last year had more of that vibrant energy. However, I adapted to the more limited expressions on display and still managed to capture some incredible shots.

I think that’s enough for now. My mind is tired from reflecting and writing about the experience. I just hope the images I’ve captured convey the essence of what I’m trying to express.
